Starting Mass351

I’ve always been fascinated that Massachusetts has 351 separate independent towns and cities, nearly one for every day of the year. It can be partly explained as a relic of the British colonial era, where each undeveloped land grant was encouraged to divide itself into smaller and smaller communities, to encourage new growth into the frontier. It is also a Massachusetts mind-set that encourages a provincial support of your own neighborhood and discourages political consolidation of any kind. But whatever the reasons, the result is an endless number of unique communities that many state residents have never seen, except maybe as a name on a highway exit or an election summary in the back of a newspaper.

Combine this with my interest in municipal architecture and history, I’ve been daydreaming about photographing every Massachusetts town or city hall. I don’t think its ever been done before, or at least cataloged in one place.
